Altai was a war hero yesterday. Today, he is a prisoner who chose exile instead of death in Rhapsody. No mercy is known to this world, the Selection. Thousands of inmates are battling each other here for a spot under the strange, cold light. Here in the ruins, the remaining extraterrestrial biomechanisms and out-of-control Terran war machines wander, and human life is measured in simulated experience that can be traded for armor and implants.
All that any dead man can hope for is to live in the Limbo slaughterhouse, upgrade to the tenth stage and get into the Green Zone. And that not everyone succeed. Altai would have to make a lot of effort just to take a breather, and something worth aiming for is to stay strong in the favor of the viewer. The Range, after all, is the most popular reality show, one of the few where everything is genuine, and death… death just boosts the ratings, among other things.
